SSI “Print & Verify” Modules - Line Level Serialization

At the lowest level, the ESC™ System is a collection of electro-mechanical modules inserted into a packaging line. These “Print & Verify” modules apply serialized codes to primary packaging, as well as each level of aggregation (case shippers, pallets, etc.). At each stage of packaging, barcodes are printed and inspected for quality. If the printed barcode meets minimum standard, the serial numbers, as well as the parent child relationships between packaging levels, are stored in SSI's serialization data warehouse.

The “Print & Verify” modules are capable of encoding serialization information into any UCC/EAN compliant barcode symbology. The predominant symbologies utilized are the Data Matrix two-dimensional code, and the Reduced Space Symbology (RSS) with link composite. Barcodes are printed using the Global Trade Identification Number (GTIN) data structure.

Each ESC™ barcode has a random number encoded into it. This number serves as a security code, and must be submitted as part of any authentication scan. The value is stored as a hashed value in the serialization database (SSI Data Vault). This hash, or one-way encryption, means that the only place the security code can be obtained is from having the package in hand. On authentication, the scanned code is hashed and compared to the hashed value stored in the database. If there is a match, then the package is deemed to be authentic.

Because of the random nature of the security code, and because it is linked to the associated serial number in the database, it is statistically impossible for a counterfeiter to create their own packaging. Without a valid security code, the barcode cannot be authenticated.
