Secure Health
The annual global market for pharmaceuticals is approximately $500 billion. Experts estimate that counterfeit drugs account for 7% to 10% of this market, posing a serious potential danger to consumers. Pharmaceutical manufacturers and outsource packaging firms are under intense government, pharmacy and consumer group pressure to find solutions to abate the counterfeiting problem.
Secure Symbology Inc.'s ESC™ System provides “track and trace” reliability from production to pharmacist, assuring consumer protection, while meeting the stringent compliance requirements of federal and state regulatory agencies. It accomplishes this by using globally accepted machine-readable bar code symbologies, and/or the emerging RFID technology, within the context of SSI's patented and novel utilization of construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of databases.
SSI's ESC™ System efficiently addresses four critical requirement areas:
- Regulatory Compliance
- Pharmaceutical Integration
- Retail Pharmacy Verification
- Consumer Protection
Regulatory Compliance – SSI offers a solution that combines the ultimately desired product, ePedigree/Track and Trace,™ and anti-counterfeiting capabilities. SSI's technology meets all current federal and state regulatory requirements, such as 21 CFR 11, and the FDA's guidelines on anti-counterfeiting, including providing "overt and covert" labeling, maintaining electronic databases on all production, and providing an ePedigree through the supply chain.
Pharmaceutical Integration – SSI's system was designed in a modular manner to integrate seamlessly into existing pharmaceutical packaging lines and control protocols, as well as being adaptable to all globally recognized symbologies, including the option of combining bar code technology with RFID using RFID's ePC™ format. The added cost of a product package using bar code technology equates to pennies, and the barcoding is achieved without compromising packaging line speeds.
Retail Pharmacy Verification – Lack of standardization and cost/efficiency at the point of sale have been the Achilles heel of currently available track and trace technologies. SSI's patented methodology utilizes existing industry-wide bar code scanners and an open Internet browser to read and authenticate drugs.
Consumer Protection – Apart from it's obvious health care benefits, the seamless and cost-effective SSI solution drastically reduces the inevitable pass-along price increases to consumers. Besides satisfying the need to strengthen the war against drug counterfeiting, holding down prices is clearly a high priority issue among consumer advocacy groups. The public sensitivity to pharmaceutical prices suggests that an acceptable anti-counterfeiting solution must avoid high costs.
In summary, the SSI technology provides regulatory compliance, ease of integration into manufacturing, secure servers, anti-counterfeiting and electronic pedigree solutions and consumer protection suitable for the unique demands of the pharmaceutical industry.
