ESC System
Secure Symbology's patent ESC™ System empowers a manufacturer with a cost-effective, complete "turnkey" system, including equipment, database and methodology for identifying and tracking counterfeit products. As a complete “turnkey” system, the ESC™ System eliminates the need to stitch together multiple vendors with potentially incompatible technologies. While applicable to virtually any industry or product with a counterfeit or potential counterfeit problem, the system was originally designed for the strict regimen of the pharmaceutical industry and is based on a platform that meets and exceeds the manufacturers' obligations under existing federal and state regulations, namely the Prescription Drug Marketing Act (PDMA) and the 2009 California e-Pedigree requirements. Unlike most solutions that offer a "component part" approach, SSI's System cost effectively integrates patented methodology with state of the art installation equipment and a highly sophisticated and secure database. Installation can be done quickly, seamlessly and in a low cost manner into any manufacturing facility packaging line.
Secure Symbology's ESC™ System applies globally accepted standard two-dimensional bar code symbology in a unique way to serialize individual product units and, eventually, all levels of packaging (case, pallet, etc.). The ESC™ System combines technology to print, scan, verify, compile, and transfer serialized data, establishing a database of a product's packaging and shipment history. The system creates a practical electronic pedigree for every individual unit, and as a result, serialized product data and verification are available globally for any authorized supply chain member (manufacturer, distributor, wholesaler, retailer, etc.), through a secure Application Software Platform (ASP).
The ESC™ System allows every serialized product to be tracked and traced through the supply chain. The system is minimally invasive to the production line, the supply chain and retail outlet, as it is comprised of existing printer technology, “off-the-shelf” readily available RSS and/or CS-enabled bar code scanners, and the Internet.
Line Level Serialization is achieved through the ESC™ Print & Verify Module, which conducts the printing and verifying of serialized barcodes. These codes are uploaded to an online Serialized Data Warehouse known as the SSI Data Vault, which enables extensive capabilities such as authentication, electronic pedigrees, tracking, and tracing for individual product units, along with valuable business intelligence when integrated into ERP systems.
ESC™ is unique to packaging lines in that it is able to create unique bar code labels for unit-level packaging. Whereas existing packaging lines print the same pre-set bar code label onto every package in the same lot, ESC™ creates a real-time “fingerprint” that is printed on the package and stored in a database. Once this information is stored and made accessible online, products can be tracked throughout their lifetime by connecting barcode scanners to web browsers.
An additional component of ESC™ is the PPOS™ Subsystem (Post-Point-of-Sale). PPOS™ includes a human readable code corresponding to the serialized bar code, which can then be entered into a secure website or through the telephone for direct product authentication by the product's end user.
Modularity and flexibility are at the heart of the ESC™ System. The software that powers the Print & Verify subsystem is designed to be able to work interchangeably for any product in any industry. Likewise, the software architecture of the SSI Data Vault is flexible enough to process and report bar code data from any Print & Verify-enabled assembly line.
